Despite its role ending World War II, little was actually known about the true power of a nuclear weapon. Scientists and military planners needed precise data. How big was the blast ring? How powerful was the shock wave? How big of a blast could an aircraft carrier sustain? What altitude of detonation gave the most devastating blast?
The only way to find answers was to detonate bombs, and these tapes chronicle the results. All-in-all, they represent the fundamental knowledge America gained about the effects of nuclear bombs.
Operation Teapot: During Operation Teapot, the Air Force flew four QF-80 drones over Frenchman's Flat to study the effects a nuclear explosion would have on aircraft in flight. This formerly classified documentary tracks the project from the modification shop to the blast site. Vivid photography shows the horizontal stabilizer whip as it is hit by the blast wave hundreds of feet above ground zero. Teapot helped write the guidelines that would improve crew survival during nuclear explosions.
